OVERVIEW
Commercial mariners and recreational sailors all need to
be trained in the operation of marine radios if the vessel
they are sailing on is equipped with:
• Very high frequency (short range) radios
• Medium frequency/high frequency (long range) radios
• Satellite communications equipment (SATCOM C)
This equipment is necessary for the receipt of weather warnings,
transmission of position reports, priority traffic, distress
messages and just keeping in touch with family and friends.
Used correctly, marine radios provide an essential link
to global safety services and other seafarers.
There are common international operating procedures and standards
laid down by the international telecommunications union and
national communications authorities that apply to this equipment.
These courses will provide you with the skills to sit for
the examination of your choice which, on successful completion,
will result in the issue of a licence by the Office of Maritime
Communications, valid internationally. This will allow you
to operate marine radio equipment world wide.
WHY DO IT?
As a crew member on a racing, cruising or commercial sailing
vessel or power boat, the holding of any of these qualifications
will enhance your value as a crew member and extend your maritime
skills.
These skills may save your vessel, your life or the life
of your family and crew.
ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing require up to two crew members
on board racing yachts to hold the Marine Radio Operators
Certificate of Proficiency.
Candidates for commercial qualifications such as STCW 95
Master Class 5 and NSCV coxswains as well as RYA and Yachting
Australia Yachtmasters are required to hold this qualification.
