OVERVIEW Many
owners of both sail and power boats have relied on their local
marine mechanics to maintain their marine diesel engines,
generally at considerable expense.
This training will provide you with the confidence and understanding
to remove and replace parts and identify common problems which
will inevitably occur on a vessel at sea.
By removing the mystery that surrounds marine diesel engines,
we can enjoy our sailing, confident that we are self reliant
mechanically.
You will be able to undertake those routine servicing and
maintenance tasks for which you previously paid out significant
sums of cash.
WHY DO IT?
This
course was developed by the RYA for those who know very little
about mechanics. The aim is to prevent machinery breakdown
at sea and to give you the confidence and knowledge to get
going again.
Volunteer marine rescue groups tell us that the main reason
they are called out to sail and power driven vessels is simple
mechanical failure.
As a crew member on a sailing or power driven vessel, this
training will extend your maritime skills and enhance your
value as a member of the crew.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
This course is very "hands on" so we spend some
time on theory, some time working on a Volvo Penta MDA 2020
three cylinder sail drive training engine in the class room
and some hours "getting down and dirty" onboard
a working yacht in survey.
BY THE END OF THE DAY YOU WILL
KNOW:
• How to identify the key parts of a diesel engine
• Understanding the four stroke diesel cycle
• How turbo chargers and intercoolers work
• Understanding fuel systems
• How to "bleed" or "vent" diesel
engines
• Understanding fresh and salt water cooling
• How pumps and impellors work
• Understanding airway systems and fault finding
• Marine electrical systems simplified
• Developing practical daily check lists
• Recommended onboard spares and tool lists
• Developing your marine engine log books
• Lubrication, winterisation and servicing
• Fault finding made easy
ABOUT THE COURSE
This training course runs for eight intensive hours, usually
over a full day.
ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTORS
Our instructors are qualified ships marine engine drivers
holding Australian National Training Authority Workplace Trainer
and Assessor qualifications.
Each instructor has been trained and assessed by the RYA
and holds current RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Instructor Rating
endorsed “Diesel Engine Instructor”.
Every instructor spends a minimum of 100 days a year at sea
and has developed unique skills that they are happy to pass
on to our course participants.
WHAT DO I BRING?
Your RYA sail and power log books for endorsement, sensible
clothing for engine room work, note pad and pen. All tools
are provided.
RYA DIESEL ENGINE CERTIFICATES
ISSUED ON COURSE COMPLETION
Offshore Maritime Training Centre Australia is accredited
by the Royal Yachting Association to train, assess and issue
certificates on successful course completion. The certificate
meets the training requirements for commercially endorsed
MCA Yachtmaster Sail and Power.
